131 SCHOLARSHIPS AWARDED TO STUDENTS AFFECTED BY SUPER TYPHOON YAGI
The “Saigon Times Foundation – Pham Phu Thu” program supports education for orphaned and underserved students in northern Vietnam
Program “Join Forces to Support Schooling After Super Typhoon Yagi” has just awarded 75 scholarships, valued at VND187,500,000, to 75 students who are orphaned or facing particularly difficult circumstances due to the impact of Typhoon Yagi in the mountainous northern provinces in September. Earlier, the program already handed scholarships to 56 students in Lao Cai, Cao Bang, and Yen Bai provinces
Thus, the “Saigon Times Foundation – Pham Phu Thu” scholarship program, with its Post-Yagi School Support Initiative, has to date awarded 131 scholarships valued at VND327,500,000 to 31 students in Lao Cai Province, 12 students in Cao Bang Province, 13 students in Yen Bai Province, and 75 students in Tuyen Quang Province, helping them to overcome their challenges and continue their education.
The “Join Forces to Support Schooling After Super Typhoon Yagi” program, under the Saigon Times Foundation – Pham Phu Thu Scholarship, in its first phase awarded 56 scholarships totaling VND140,000,000. The scholarships were granted to students who lost their parents or face especially difficult circumstances following Typhoon Yagi’s impact on northern mountainous provinces.
These scholarships are a message of encouragement from compassionate philanthropists, aiming to provide students with the strength to excel in their studies and become productive members of society.
Ms. Tran Thi Thoa, Deputy Principal of Ta Giang Phin Primary Semi-Boarding School, Lao Cai, said: “After the typhoon, many students’ families faced severe difficulties. Despite their eagerness to learn, students like Hang Thi Xuan and Hang Thi Mao faced significant challenges after losing their father. Thanks to this support, they can buy warm clothes for winter and school supplies to continue attending school. The teachers and I are deeply moved by this invaluable assistance from the organizers. On behalf of the school, teachers, and students, I sincerely thank the philanthropists through the Saigon Times Foundation.”
Mr. Hoang Van Ly, Homeroom Teacher of 9th grade at Tan Phuong Primary and Secondary School, Luc Yen, Yen Bai, expressed gratitude on behalf of the school to the benefactors and organizers for their care and support. “Many students’ families, especially Trieu Thi Tinh’s, are enduring extreme hardship, and it will take time for them to recover. The support from the philanthropists is timely and greatly appreciated, offering essential motivation for students to continue their education,” Mr. Ly emphasized.
The “Join Forces to Support Schooling After Super Typhoon Yagi” program will continue to award scholarships to students in provinces affected by the storm. The organizers are coordinating with local Departments of Education and Training, as well as schools, to distribute the scholarships as quickly as possible.
Beyond assisting students orphaned by the typhoon who lack the means to continue schooling, the program will enter its second phase, focusing on students from disadvantaged backgrounds who are passionate about fields like technology, science, engineering, and space exploration. The Vietnamese government has emphasized its commitment to transitioning toward a digital economy and advancing science and technology, presenting a promising opportunity to unlock the potential of Vietnam’s young generation.
The Saigon Times Foundation – Pham Phu Thu Scholarship was co-founded by Mr. Pham Phu Ngoc Trai, Chairman of GIBC, and several businesspeople. Since its inception in 2017, the program has garnered strong support from numerous businesses and philanthropists. Their generosity has enabled over 4,000 children to continue their education, making a significant contribution to fostering a community focused on educational development and building a prosperous and sustainable society.
For over seven years, Mr. Pham Phu Ngoc Trai, Chairman of GIBC and Chairman of the Saigon Times Foundation Sponsorship Council, has consistently supported the scholarship program. He emphasized: “Philanthropy in education carries a profound social philosophy. It serves as the foundation for building a sustainable, knowledgeable society.”
“I have unwavering faith in the talent of Vietnam’s young generation and believe they will enjoy a brighter future,” Mr. Trai said.
